Microdermabrasion Facial: My Thoughts!

microdermabrasion facial

So this whole idea of a “microdermabrasion facial” is really popular nowadays even though it looks and sounds painful…spraying little crystals all over your face and rubbing them around and vacuuming them up?

But microdermabrasion definitely has its benefits despite the mild discomfort, or people wouldn’t keep going back! It ISN’T supposed to hurt but it may make your skin feel weird and tight. It’ll also unfortunately inflame acne and worsen the appearance of acne scars. It won’t reduce wrinkles much either…

I know I’m not exactly talking it up here, but I want to emphasize that a MICROdermabrasion facial is not the same thing as a dermabrasion facial, but was developed later as a safer alternative. Yes, the original form of dermabrasion is DANGEROUS and I don’t recommend it, even if it can get rid of acne scars…because it gets rid of them by using an abrasive that, in the wrong hands, can cause permanent SCARS or discoloration (which would be more evident looking the darker your skin tone is).

A microdermabrasion facial, on the other hand, is designed to be more subtle ā€” so while it won’t get rid of anything more than the finest fine lines, or the lightest sun spots, it also won’t damage your skin!!

What it WILL do is act as a powerful exfoliant that smooths the texture of the skin and gives it a nicely toned sheen (but not too shiny). It gets rid of that dead dry layer of skin ā€” and trust me, the dead skin, dirt and blackheads coming off your skin in a glob would be a little gag-worthy if you could see it!

So while it is a little bit limited in what it can do since it’s not, like, “resurfacing” your skin as much as a dangerous dermabrasion, most people say their skin looks more REFRESHED and hydrated when they are done!

Speaking of “hydrated,” though…

One thing a microdermabrasion facial can’t do is improve your skin permanently.

The benefits are temporary and fade as the pores and blackheads return, and the skin cell layer and unevenness returns…and you’ve gotta do it again and again if you want to keep your skin looking RADIANT!

The problem with doing it AGAIN and AGAIN is, it can cost $200+ at a salon…

I wouldn’t really trust an at-home microdermabrasion device because even though it isn’t dangerous, some of these knockoff products certainly could be…

So, my personal solution…

…is to just use an exfoliating cleanser instead!!

At least when it comes to the day-in, day-out. Then you can go treat yourself with a microdermabrasion facial for really special events. Although in my opinion, Nu Skin Exfoliant Scrub is almost just as good and for less than $15 to boot! Plus this scrub is really special and unique…I LOVE telling people about it because it means I get to put my biologist hat on…lol!

(I’m a very brave biologist, by the way!! šŸ˜‰)

Basically, the reason this scrub can be even gentler than microdermabrasion yet still effective is because it doesn’t exactly use tiny CRYSTALS…instead, it uses tiny MARINE ORGANISMS! (Well, fossils at least!)

Yep, you heard that right! It uses what’s called “diatoms,” which are teeny tiny algae that “live in glass houses,” and are the only creatures on the planet with cell walls that are basically glass!

Don’t worry, they don’t throw stones šŸ˜‰, and they don’t cut your skin either ā€” this is a gentle silica!

It also has a “bioadaptive botanical blend” in addition to this, including ginseng and mushroom, which may help your skin be MORE RESILIENT to stress, so that’s a biggie!

In my opinion you can’t go wrong with that when it comes to ensuring smooth, bright skin DAILY…instead of getting a procedure done, and then having it fade.

Microdermabrasion facials are still a good idea, just not so good on the bank account! šŸ˜‰
